Dental Treatment in Ireland vs Turkey
A single dental implant with crown costs €2,000–€3,500 privately in Ireland, and a full-arch All-on-4 runs €15,000–€25,000 per jaw. The same treatments at our partner clinic in Kuşadası start from €399 and €2,400 per arch, all-inclusive with hotel and transfers, using the same implant and ceramic brands. This guide puts the real numbers side by side, explains what the Treatment Benefit Scheme and Med 2 tax relief do and do not cover, and is honest about when a flight is not worth it.
| Treatment | Ireland | Turkey (all-inclusive) | You save |
|---|---|---|---|
| Single dental implant (with crown) | €2,000–€3,500 (Dublin often higher) | from €399–€700 | up to ~80% |
| Zirconia crown | €800–€1,200 | from €149–€250 | up to ~80% |
| Porcelain / E-max veneer | €700–€1,200 | from €165–€300 | up to ~75% |
| All-on-4 (full arch, fixed) | €15,000–€25,000 per arch | from €2,400–€3,400 per arch (whole mouth €4,800–€6,800) | up to ~85% |
| CBCT 3D scan | €100–€200 | included in the plan | — |
| Bone graft (when needed) | €500–€1,500 | from €120–€350 | up to ~75% |
Indicative 2026 ranges for comparison only. Irish figures are typical private fees and vary widely between Dublin and the rest of the country; the PRSI Treatment Benefit Scheme does not cover crowns, veneers or implants. Turkish prices are our partner clinic’s all-inclusive starting prices in euro, confirmed in writing from your photos or X-ray before you book anything.
Why so many Irish patients look abroad
Ireland has no public dental service for adults in the way the UK has the NHS. Unless you hold a medical card — which covers emergency and a limited range of routine care — every crown, veneer, implant and root canal is paid for privately, at some of the highest fees in Western Europe. The result is familiar to most Irish families: a tooth that could have been saved for a few hundred euro is left until it becomes a €3,000 implant decision, or a quote for a full mouth lands somewhere between the price of a car and a house deposit. Travelling for treatment is not new in Ireland — Budapest and Northern Ireland have been the usual destinations for twenty years — but Turkey now offers lower prices, in-house laboratories and a holiday climate, which is why it has overtaken both.
What the Treatment Benefit Scheme and Med 2 actually cover
Two things soften the cost at home, and both are smaller than people hope. The PRSI Treatment Benefit Scheme, available to employed and self-employed people with enough contributions, gives you one free oral examination per calendar year and a contribution of €42 towards a scale and polish; it pays nothing towards crowns, veneers, implants or bridges. Separately, Revenue allows tax relief at the standard rate of 20% on non-routine dental treatment — crowns, veneers, implants, bridges, root canal treatment and orthodontics — claimed with a Med 2 form signed by the dentist. Routine work such as fillings, extractions and cleaning does not qualify. The detail most people miss: that relief is not limited to Ireland. Revenue’s guidance allows claims for non-routine treatment carried out abroad, provided the practitioner is qualified to practise in that country, so a €4,000 treatment plan in Turkey can still return €800 to you. Keep every receipt and ask the clinic to complete the Med 2; check the current Revenue guidance before you travel, as rules can change.
Does the Cross-Border Directive help? Honestly, no
The HSE Cross-Border Directive reimburses certain treatments received in another EU or EEA state at the Irish public rate, and the separate Northern Ireland Planned Healthcare Scheme does the same for the North. Turkey is in neither, so there is no HSE reimbursement for treatment in Kuşadası. If a Cross-Border Directive refund matters to you, a clinic in Spain, Poland or Hungary is the route to look at — but note that the directive mainly covers treatment the HSE itself would provide, which excludes most cosmetic and implant work anyway. For implants, veneers and full-arch cases the comparison is simply private Irish fee against all-inclusive Turkish price, with Med 2 relief available on either.
Ireland vs Turkey, like for like
The table above compares the same procedures, not a premium Irish clinic against a bargain Turkish one. The implant systems used in Kuşadası are Straumann Group and Neodent — the same brands a Dublin implantologist would put in — and the ceramics are Ivoclar E-max and monolithic zirconia. Where the comparison is genuinely different is what sits around the treatment: in Ireland the fee is for the chair time and the laboratory invoice, and you add your own travel, parking and time off; in Kuşadası the quoted price covers treatment, a 5-star hotel, VIP airport transfers and the CBCT scan, so a €4,000 Irish quote for two implants and crowns becomes roughly €800–€1,400 in Turkey before you add a return flight from Dublin. On a single crown the saving is real but small once flights are counted; from two or three units upwards, and on anything full-arch, the gap is large enough that the trip pays for itself many times over.
Why the gap is this large
Three reasons, none of them about cutting corners. Dentists’ and technicians’ salaries, rent and running costs in Aydın province are a fraction of those in Dublin or Cork. Our partner clinic has its own laboratory in the building, so crowns and veneers are designed, milled and adjusted on site without the outsourced-lab invoice and courier delays that Irish practices pay for. And volume: a clinic treating around 3,000 international patients a year buys implants and ceramics at prices a two-chair practice in Galway cannot. What you should check, in Ireland or Turkey, is identical — Ministry of Health authorisation, named brands written into the plan, a warranty document in your name and a price confirmed before you travel.
Getting from Ireland to Kuşadası
Kuşadası is served by İzmir Adnan Menderes Airport (ADB), about 1 hour 20 minutes away by road. From Dublin, most patients fly Turkish Airlines or Pegasus via Istanbul with a short connection, which puts the door-to-door journey at roughly 8–9 hours; seasonal services to İzmir and nearby Bodrum appear in summer schedules and are worth checking for your dates. From Cork or Shannon the connection is usually via London or Istanbul. Our package includes VIP transfer from the airport to your hotel and back, and the hotel is within walking distance of the clinic and the seafront. Irish passport holders currently do not need a visa for tourist stays of up to 90 days — confirm on the Department of Foreign Affairs travel advice before you fly — and because Turkey is outside the EU your European Health Insurance Card does not apply, so carry ordinary travel insurance alongside your passport and written treatment plan.
How many trips, and how long
Veneers, crowns, a Hollywood smile or whitening are completed in a single stay of 5–7 nights, because the laboratory is on site. Dental implants and All-on-4 or All-on-6 need two visits: around five days for placement, then a healing period of roughly three to four months at home, then a second visit of about five days for the final crowns or bridge — with fixed temporary teeth in between so you are never without a smile. Same-day implants shorten the first phase for suitable cases. Plan the first trip outside the Irish school holidays if you can; flights are markedly cheaper and the clinic diary is quieter.
“Turkey teeth” — the honest version for Irish patients
Irish dentists and the Irish Dental Association have warned repeatedly about patients returning with over-prepared teeth, failed crowns and no one to fix them. The warning is fair, and it describes a specific kind of clinic: one that files healthy teeth down to pegs to fit a full set of crowns, quotes only in the chair, and has no written warranty to honour. The way to avoid it is not to avoid Turkey but to refuse that model. Our partner clinic will tell you when veneers — or nothing at all — are the right answer for healthy front teeth, uses E-max veneers that need minimal preparation, names every brand in a written plan before you fly, and issues warranty documents in your name. If any clinic, including ours, cannot show you these four things in writing, keep looking. We have written a separate, frank guide to what goes wrong and how to spot it.
When staying in Ireland is the better choice
A single filling, a single crown on a back tooth, or a chipped edge that bonding will fix: book your local dentist. The saving does not cover the flights, and continuity with one practice is worth something. The same applies if you cannot realistically travel twice for implants, if you have a medical history that needs your own consultant close by, or if you simply would rather pay more and have the work done ten minutes from home. For patients in the border counties, Northern Ireland remains a sensible middle option for routine private work. Turkey earns its place when the treatment plan runs to several units, when you have been quoted five figures, or when you want fixed teeth instead of a denture and the Irish price has put that out of reach.
Warranties, aftercare and what happens back home
You leave Kuşadası with a written warranty in your name — up to lifetime on the premium implant fixtures, 10 years on E-max veneers and 5 years on zirconia crowns — together with your treatment record and X-rays, which you can hand to your Irish dentist. Routine hygiene and check-ups continue at home as normal; your dentist does not need to do anything unusual. If something needs adjusting, send us a photo and we will tell you honestly whether it can be handled locally or whether it falls under the warranty for correction at the clinic. A warranty is a promise about materials and workmanship, not a guarantee of a biological outcome: no clinic in any country can promise that an implant will integrate, and you should be wary of one that does.
Frequently asked questions
+How much do dental implants cost in Ireland?
A single implant with crown typically costs €2,000–€3,500 privately in Ireland, with Dublin practices often at the top of that range or above it. At our partner clinic in Kuşadası the same implant and crown starts from €399, all-inclusive, using Straumann Group or Neodent systems.
+Can I claim tax relief on dental treatment done in Turkey?
Revenue allows 20% tax relief on non-routine dental treatment — crowns, veneers, implants, bridges, root canals — claimed on a Med 2 form, and its guidance extends that to treatment abroad where the dentist is qualified to practise in that country. Keep receipts, ask the clinic to complete the Med 2, and check the current Revenue rules before travelling.
+Does the HSE Cross-Border Directive cover Turkey?
No. The directive applies to EU and EEA states only, and mostly to treatment the HSE would itself provide, which excludes most implant and cosmetic work. Treatment in Turkey is a private cost, with Med 2 tax relief the only state element.
+What does the PRSI Treatment Benefit Scheme pay for?
One free oral examination per calendar year and €42 towards a scale and polish, for people with enough PRSI contributions. It pays nothing towards crowns, veneers, implants or bridges.
+How do I get from Dublin to Kuşadası?
Fly to İzmir (ADB), usually via Istanbul with Turkish Airlines or Pegasus; check for seasonal direct services to İzmir or Bodrum in summer. Kuşadası is about 1 hour 20 minutes from İzmir Airport, and VIP transfers are included in our package.
+How long do I need to stay?
Veneers, crowns and smile makeovers take one stay of 5–7 nights. Implants and All-on-4 need two visits of about five days each, three to four months apart, with fixed temporary teeth in between.
+Is it safe — what about “Turkey teeth”?
The problems Irish dentists warn about come from a specific clinic model: over-preparing healthy teeth, quoting only in the chair, no written warranty. Insist on a written plan with named brands before you fly, a warranty in your name and a clinic that will say no to unnecessary crowns. Our partner clinic meets all three; put any clinic through the same test.
+What does all-inclusive include?
The treatment itself, the CBCT scan and consultation, a 5-star hotel stay and VIP airport transfers. Flights are not included. Your exact price is confirmed in writing from your photos or X-ray before you book anything.
