Ephesus — the one thing you should not skip
Ephesus was one of the great cities of the Roman world and enough of it is still standing that you walk down real marble streets rather than looking at outlines in the grass. The Library of Celsus and the Great Theatre are the two images everyone recognises, but the stretch of Curetes Street between them is what makes the visit. Allow two to three hours if you want to walk it properly. There is very little shade, so the middle of a summer day is the hardest time to be there — early morning or late afternoon is far more comfortable. The site has two gates, upper and lower; walking downhill from the upper gate is the easier direction.
The Christian sites: Virgin Mary, St John, the Seven Sleepers
The House of the Virgin Mary sits in pine forest on Bülbül Mountain above Ephesus and is a small stone chapel rather than a monument — it takes under an hour including the walk. The Basilica of St John stands on Ayasuluk Hill in Selçuk, above the town, with a view over the whole plain. Nearby is the cave associated with the Seven Sleepers, a legend shared by both Christian and Islamic tradition. These three are usually combined with Ephesus in a single trip, since they are all within a few kilometres of each other.
Şirince — the village in the hills
Şirince is a former Greek village on a hillside beyond Selçuk, about thirty-five minutes from Kuşadası. Stone and timber houses, steep cobbled lanes, and a long-standing trade in fruit wines that you will be offered to taste roughly every twenty metres. It is genuinely pretty and genuinely touristic at the same time. Mornings are much quieter than midday, when the tour groups arrive. Half a day is enough, and it pairs naturally with Ephesus since you pass Selçuk on the way.
If you are here on a cruise day
Kuşadası's cruise terminal, Ege Ports, is unusually convenient: the old town, the bazaar and the marina start at the gate and are walkable. That means a port day can be split — a few hours at Ephesus in the morning and the town in the afternoon is a comfortable pace, not a rushed one. What does not work is trying to add Şirince, Ephesus and the Virgin Mary to a single short call; you will spend the day in a vehicle.
An honest note about dental treatment on a short visit
We are a dental clinic in central Kuşadası, a short taxi ride from the cruise terminal, so this question reaches us constantly. The honest answer has two halves. Short treatments genuinely do fit into a spare afternoon: professional cleaning, whitening, a simple filling or re-cementing a crown that has come loose. Anything that needs laboratory work does not — crowns, veneers and implants require several appointments across a stay of five to seven nights, and implants need a healing period on top of that. We would rather tell you that in advance than start something we cannot finish before your ship leaves.
